London is crazy busy at the moment. From the BAFTAs and hosting the
largest Chinese New Year celebrations outside of China on the weekend,
to Fashion Week, we have spotted a gem of a festival.
Now in its second year, Switched on London (http://www.switchedonlondon.com/) is the capitals only lighting festival and allows us see London in a new 'light' by
illuminating famous landmarks such as Tower Bridge, London Bridge and HMS Belfast.
For each of the 15 locations, a manufacturing company has been matched
up with a lighting designer to create a piece that stresses the
importance of lighting from a social, economic and environmental
perspective. By doing this, they are also providing realistic carbon
neutral solutions to the wasteful and often inefficient lighting that
is currently used to light up many of our cities.
Each project is being audited for their energy use to illustrate that
alternative technologies can often provide better lighting whilst using
less energy.
One of the best examples from this year's festival is the Tower Bridge, a collaboration between Hoare Lea Lighting (http://www.hoarelealighting.com) and Sill Lighting. (http://www.sill-uk.com)
Utilising the latest technologies they have created a theatrical and
energy conscious lighting scheme that redefines the bridge's
architecture at night while retaining its unique character. Lowering
the Bridge's energy consumption from 13KW to 2.3 KW, we hope to soon
see examples like this being permanently installed in landmarks and
cities worldwide. By Brendan McKnight
